Redesign Preview Now Available

May 30th 2008

A sneak preview of the redesigned ALA website is now available at http://www.ala.org/preview .  This is a semi-working version, so expect errors!  In the quick links along the bottom of the header, only Divisions and Round Tables have any content in them at the moment.  Know also that if you click on the “more” link below one of the three news sections, you will be taken back to the old design because we haven’t moved that content into the staging area yet.  Also, shortcuts you might have come to use (such as www.ala.org/lita) do not work on the staging site.  That is to say, http://www.ala.org/lita will work, but staging.ala.org/lita will not. Redirects will all work as expected when we move to the live site.  As of 4:00 p.m. today, we have not been able to make the highlight images “clickable.”  Again, you will be able to click on a highlight image when the site goes live.

Please let us know what you think by writing us a comment, below.  We will continue to work on the site over the next few weeks, so come back often.  We  expect to have the site much more “fleshed out” by Annual Conference at the end of June.

Sympa List Server Problem (Now Fixed)

May 20th 2008

There was a problem with Sympa yesterday between about 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Our consultant restarted the Sympa server to incorporate configuration parameters to reduce the bogus message processing, but Sympa did not restart correctly. It took until 4:00 p.m. to process all the messages waiting distribution.

We’ve asked the consultant to create a script to check the message queues every 5 minutes and send us an alert when there are more then 100 messages backed up. This script will be put in place on Wednesday.

Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.

Training at Annual Conference 2008

May 15th 2008

There are Collage classes, a wiki class, and lots of one-on-one tech tutorial sessions available during annual conference. Because these sessions are only for member-volunteers, they are not listed in the event catalog. You can see the class descriptions, times & locations here: http://wikis.ala.org/learningcollage/index.php/Current_events ; it is possible to register for a class and/or a help session here: http://alatechtraining.wufoo.com/forms/tech-classes-help-sessions/.

The sessions at mid-winter were very popular and members were enthusiastic about them. We hope that those who update the website or who plan to administer a wiki will take advantage of this opportunity to attend an in-person session.

Please let us know if you think we should continue offering such sessions at conference.

Online Communities Update (with Documents!)

May 8th 2008

one possible logo for ALAconnect It’s been a while since I posted about our Online Communities project, mainly because we’ve been putting things in place and ramping up to get started. Unfortunately, the RFP process took a week longer than we’d planned, and then it took a month for the lawyers to hammer out the contract. Having lost five weeks from our original timeline, we’ve had to revise our schedule.

That said, we are thrilled to finally be speeding full steam ahead with Urban Insight, the company we’ve hired to create our new Communities service in Drupal. UI submitted a very thorough proposal for the project, and we can report that they’re doing a great job so far getting things moving. More importantly, they’ve been essential in the planning process, which has been a big help.

Things are ramping up now, as we have a dedicated server in place specifically for this project. We’ve also contracted with UserWorks to design the interface. You may recognize this name as the company ALA has been working with to redesign our website, so they’ve already got a head start understanding our needs.

So given the initial delay, we’ve had to revise our schedule. It’s no longer possible to have a live, fully-functional product for Annual in June. However, we will have a working demo of a sample committee using the Web Advisory Commitee as an example. Our plan now is to spend July and August implementing all of the features and start beta testing in September. If all goes well, we’ll have a live product in October for use leading up to the Midwinter Meeting.

We’ve been working hard to get to this point, and I think it shows in the Requirements Document & CMS Architecture . This planning document will guide us through the development of this phase of the project, and soon we’ll have a Technical Specifications document to share here as well.

I want to provide some context for you as you read these documents, though. Phase one (which we’re in) involves replacing and enhancing our existing Online Communities service that is designed to allow members to collaborate virtually. In the new version, there will be more tools and they will be a little more social, in that you’ll be able to find fellow members with similar interests, create special interest groups on the fly (including ones such as “librarians who love dogs and knitting and are going to Midwinter 2009″), explore the beginnings of a mentoring network, and more.

But it’s really phase two where we start implementing ways for you to find and connect with other members around professional interests, issues, advocacy, your job, the work of the Association, meeting up with friends & colleagues when you attend ALA conferences, and the like. Although we’ve referred to this as “ALA’s social network,” it’s probably more accurate to think of it as ALA’s professional network, an online version of what has traditionally taken place in the physical world. This isn’t going to be “ALA MySpace,” although there will be hooks into and out of some social sites such as del.icio.us (bookmarks), Facebook (connections), Flickr (pictures), and Twitter (micro-conversations).

I’ll be writing a lot more about this here in the coming months, but for now, I want to note that when you read these documents and see the new site, it will be branded “ALAconnect,” not “Online Communities,” because this is the foundation for the social network (phase two) and a possible CE clearinghouse (potentially phase three). The name “ALAconnect” will be the umbrella for this more interactive side of our website, so we’re implementing the branding now to avoid confusion later.

If you have questions about these documents (or anything else about this project), please leave them as comments here so that everyone can see the answers.

Website Redesign Update

May 5th 2008

Welcome! The purpose of this blog post / web page is to introduce the new graphic design and information architecture for the American Library Association website, and to solicit your feedback.

ALA will unveil our redesigned website at our 2008 Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA. The site has undergone an extensive usability assessment and redesign process, with the expertise of UserWorks, Inc., a Silver Spring, MD, usability and design consulting firm. For a description of the process, please read this background document (pdf).

To view key documents produced during the usability assessment and redesign process, please visit the web planning wiki at http://wikis.ala.org/webplanning. Of particular interest are the Strategy Recommendations Report and the Information Architecture Strategy Recommendations Report.

To view sample pages of the graphic redesign, please visit the following:

Content Page

(Please note that the sample pages are intended to show a journey from the ALA home page, through the awards section, to an envisioned Caldecott Medal page.)

This is a work in progress.  Some of the things you will see in these graphic design samples have already been changed, though not drastically.  We are still tweaking the information architecture as well, and will probably continue to do so as we move forward.  We plan to implement a process of continuous improvement for the ALA website.

We welcome your input; please leave a comment, below.
